Social Security for Employees in Mali
Illness, a work-related accident, the birth of a child, or retirement can change an employee’s needs and income. Social Security provides protection against these situations through contributions that fund medical care, benefits, and pensions.
For employees, it helps protect their health and income. For employers, it entails obligations to report and pay contributions.
1. What situations are covered?
Employee protection is organized around four main areas:
| Area | What does this protection cover? |
|---|---|
| Old Age, Disability, and Death | To provide for retirement income, disability benefits, and survivor benefits in the event of death. |
| Work-Related Accidents and Occupational Diseases | To cover the consequences of accidents and illnesses recognized as work-related. |
| Health insurance | To cover a portion of beneficiaries’ health care expenses. |
| Family benefits | Providing support for family events and contributing to child support, subject to certain conditions. |
These areas correspond to distinct entitlements, each with its own eligibility requirements.
Social Security Code; INPS, Mandatory Health Insurance.
2. Old Age, Disability, and Death
This coverage addresses three different situations:
- Old age: An employee may be eligible for a retirement pension when they meet the required conditions.
- Disability: A significant reduction in work capacity may entitle the employee to a specific benefit.
- Death: Certain beneficiaries may be eligible for survivor benefits.
Death, therefore, does not constitute retirement. It may entitle the insured person’s family to benefits.
Social Security Code: Old Age, Disability, and Death.
3. Work-Related Accidents and Occupational Diseases
An accident occurring in the course of work or an illness recognized as an occupational disease may require medical care and result in a temporary interruption of work.
Coverage may include:
- coverage of medical expenses;
- compensation during temporary inability to work;
- a benefit in the event of permanent disability;
- benefits for dependents in the event of death.
Example: An employee injured during a material-handling operation may be covered under this program, following the filing of a claim and review of their case.
INPS, work-related accidents, and occupational diseases.
4. Health Insurance
Mandatory Health Insurance (AMO) covers a portion of healthcare costs. It applies to the insured person and, under certain conditions, to some of their family members.
Coverage does not necessarily mean that all care is free: the beneficiary may still be responsible for a portion of the expenses. This portion is called the copayment.
Example: During a covered medical visit, the insurance pays its share according to the applicable rules, while the patient pays the remaining amount.
5. Family Benefits
Family benefits are provided, in particular, for marriage, pregnancy, childbirth, and child support.
They include, in particular:
- the first-time home purchase bonus;
- prenatal allowances;
- maternity benefits;
- daily benefits during maternity leave;
- child support for dependent children.
To receive each benefit, you must meet the specified requirements and provide the corresponding supporting documentation. Simply being registered is not enough to automatically qualify for all benefits.
Social Security Code, family benefits; INPS, general conditions.
6. Who funds Social Security?
Funding relies primarily on social security contributions. Some are paid entirely by the employer; others are shared with the employee.
For employees covered by the INPS, the published rates are as follows:
| Branch | Employer’s share | Employee Share |
|---|---|---|
| Family benefits | 8% | — |
| Work-related accidents and occupational diseases | 1% to 4% | — |
| Pension insurance | 3.40% | 3.60% |
| Disability and death | 2% | — |
| Mandatory Health Insurance | 3.50% | 3.06% |
These rates apply to wages subject to social security contributions. The workers’ compensation rate depends on the company’s classification.
The employer is responsible for paying both portions: the employer deducts the employee’s contribution from the paycheck and remits it along with the employer’s own contribution.

7. How can you make it easier to access your benefits?
Good management starts with accurate information and well-maintained records.
It is in the employee’s best interest to:
- know their registration number;
- keep their pay stubs and employment certificates;
- verify that their personal information is accurate;
- report any changes in family status;
- prepare the necessary supporting documents for each request.
For its part, the employer must ensure that wage reports are filed and contributions are paid by the applicable deadlines.
8. Key Points
- Social security protects against various risks and provides support for certain family events.
- Each benefit has its own eligibility requirements.
- The employer and the employee contribute to the funding depending on the relevant branch.
- The employer is responsible for remitting both employer and employee contributions.
- Accurate reports and properly maintained supporting documents facilitate the review of eligibility.
