Health insurance - AMO

How the AMO works

22 June 2026

Compulsory health insurance is based on the principles of solidarity, contribution, risk pooling and direct billing (Article L.4).

Insured persons and their dependants must be covered without discrimination on grounds of age, sex, occupation, contributions, place of residence or medical history.

Coverage of costs under the AMO scheme is funded by a dual employer and employee contribution, with the employee’s share not exceeding 50 per cent of the total rate.

As for pensioners and self-employed workers, the costs are covered by a single contribution payable by the insured person.
